The Southtown Avengers: Big Night Out

Album Art Creative Problem Solving

When viewing a finished design, all the pieces come together effortlessly, but that doesn’t mean it started that way. Dealing with a small budget made even capturing the photo a bit of a challenge.

With no money for models or even a proper studio, STA drummer, Derek Sandbeck, provided legs for both the dancing male and the fallen male.

With the use of a tripod, Jen became the dancing female.

Then all three pieces came together in Photoshop and were made black and white.

Now that the photo was ready, the entire album got laid out with the text. The band wanted their art to mirror the style of a 1960′s vinyl record.

To help facilitate the illusion, the photo was given a blue wash to emulate the old Blue Note Records style.

Finally layers of effects got added to age the piece and add wear and tear. Specifically, white rings were added to simulate the wear from a record to its sleeve.
